UWB (Ultra-Wideband) is a radio protocol known for its speed, security, and low power consumption. It is primarily used for precise location tracking. Compared to Bluetooth, UWB offers wider coverage and more reliable connectivity. It also provides greater accuracy in location determination.
The concept of UWB dates back to the late 1800s. However, its development was paused until after World War II, when advancements resumed, particularly for military applications. In 2002, the FCC amended regulations to permit the use of UWB without a license. In 2019, Apple incorporated UWB technology into the iPhone.
Despite UWB’s long history, products utilizing this technology remain limited. It is expected to become as widely recognized as Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi in the near future.
